MLS Interview: FC Dallas' BREK SHEA

Monday 26th September 2011
Brek Shea currently plays for MLS side FC Dallas as a versatile attacking player and also holds 5 caps for the U.S. National Team. In this interview we will be asking him what goals he sets himself, what it means to play in the U.S. National Team and what advice he can give up and coming players.

How important is it for you to play on the US National team?

Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to play for the national team.  So every time I get called in, I am excited.  Being in the last couple of times, I really enjoyed being with the guys and I had a good time.

If you could play in any other league in the world, which would you choose?

I don't know.  I get that question sometimes, but I really don't know.  I don't really have a preference, but I enjoy watching whatever is on TV.

Who is the most difficult player you have had to play against?

Kosuke Kimura is really tough for Colorado. He's a good player and he definitely gives me a hard time.  But that's what you want to face as a player.

What type of goals do you set for yourself at the start of each season?

I always try to be better than the year before and improve.  You should never be happy with where you are.  You should always want to be better.

In 2007, you went to England to train with Bolton Wanderers FC.  What was that experience like?

That seems like a long time ago.  I enjoyed it a lot.  It's very intense and they expect a lot out of you, even in the little things.  They expect you to not have a bad touch and they hold you to a high standard.  I enjoyed that.

What advice would you give to players looking to join the MLS?

You just have to have fun playing.  That's how I got here.  I enjoy what I do.  It makes the hard work you put in easier if you enjoy it.  It's a good league that grows every year.  I think that a lot of young players are starting to have success here.

How do you think that MLS has grown?

Every year the league has grown.  There are more and more fans, more teams, and elite players coming over.  It's definitely on its way up and I can't wait to see where the league is in five years.

Why did you choose soccer over all of the other American sports?

Growing up I played everything.  I played football, baseball, and basketball.  I just enjoyed it the most.  With all of the other sports, there are set plays and specific things that you have to do.  I like the freedom with soccer, being able to do what you want and having some freedom.

I would like to thank both Brek Shea and FC Dallas for allowing this interview and giving their time. FC Dallas are currently 4th in the Western Conference with their next match scheduled on 28th September against Tauro FC in the CONCACAF Champions League.
