Modeste's on fire, the Bundesliga is terrified!

Tuesday 1st November 2016
A big derby, a first away win for Freiburg and a sensational hat-trick for Anthony Modeste are the stories of Bundesliga Gameweek 9. Mark Dannell has the report

Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Eintracht Frankfurt - 0:0

Fair to say this was not a thriller on Friday night. It's really hard to say who had the best of it, Frankfurt perhaps just shaded the first half while BMG were unlucky not score when Oscar Wendt smacked one off the bar in the 2nd half. Both teams employed a stifling press which meant there was not much in the way of attacking threat. Frankfurt will be pretty happy with the point you would imagine, while Mönchengladbach need to start winning at home since they can't do it away!

Prediction – Home Win. Wrong

1.FSV Mainz 05 vs FC Ingolstadt 04 - 2:0

Goals from Malli and Öztunali in the 2nd half secured a comfortable win for Mainz and a return to winning ways. Ingolstadt remain mired adrift at the bottom of the table and it is hard to see where a result is coming from for them. Both sides had been in cup action midweek and it showed in a sluggish first half. After the break, it was Mainz who were the more purposeful and Malli gratefully converted a spot kick after Brosinski was taken out. Öztunali wrapped it up from close range just before the end.

Prediction – Home Win. Spot On.

VfL Wolfsburg vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen - 1:2

Another week, another loss for Wolfsburg who desperately need a new coach. Despite taking the lead through Arnold in the first half, Leverkusen scored twice in 5 minutes with the game heading to a close to take the points.

It was no less than Leverkusen deserved in truth, they dominated the first-half without scoring and then Arnold punished them with Wolfsburg's first chance of the match. After the break, it remained one-way traffic, Julian Brandt was particularly impressive on the flank but it was Kevin Kampl on the opposite flank who found the key, sliding in Heinrichs who crossed to Mehmedi for the equalizer. 5 minutes later the comeback was complete, Tin Jedvaj taking advantage of some awful defending to power home a lose ball.

Prediction – Draw. Wrong

FC Augsburg vs FC Bayern München - 1:3

I was going to write "told you so" in here and leave it at that but Bayern were really very impressive. Two goals for Lewandowski, both assisted by Robben and a goal for the Dutchman assisted by... Lewandowski. Of course, some fool has now crowned them "Robbendowski". Those were Lewandowski's first goals for over 8 hours of Bundesliga action, an astonishing statistic. Next up for the Bayern express is unbeaten Hoffenheim who should put up more resistance than a pathetic Augsburg managed. If you are interested Koo netted the consolation once Bayern had well and truly taken their foot off the gas.

Prediction – Away Win. Spot On

SV Werder Bremen vs SC Freiburg - 1:3

Freiburg have won away and what a performance to go with it! Goals from Philipp and Grifo before half time sent them on their way and after Werder pulled one back via Garcia, Abrashi was able to wrap up the points via a huge deflection.

Werder had started off like a freight train, Schwolow had to save twice in quick succession from Manneh and Hajrovic. Freiburg utilised the counter to devastating effect, first Philipp with an excellent solo goal and then Grifo added a penalty after a foul by Manneh. After that, they were able to hold Werder at arm's length for an excellent first away win of the season.

Prediction – Home Win. Wrong

SV Darmstadt 98 vs RB Leipzig - 0:2

A thoroughly professional away performance by Leipzig who are looking every inch the best of the rest at the moment. Sabitzer came back from injury with a second-half appearance from the subs bench and promptly scored twice while Oliver Burke assisted one of those, also from the bench. Darmstadt were just about chance less throughout, a half chance snatched at by Bernardo just before half-time was as good as it got!

Prediction – Away Win. Spot On

Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke 04 - 0:0

It seem's an awful long time ago that Schalke started the season with 5 defeats in a row, they were excellent on Saturday night from back to front. The atmosphere was something else, even watching on TV I had goosebumps from time to time!

Schalke was hungry from the off, hunting in packs and dominating the midfield so that Dortmund found it very difficult to play. The official Bundesliga website claims that it was the first time Dortmund failed to register a shot on goal at home in the first half  EVER.  Sensational stat that if true.

Dortmund were able to turn the screw in the 2nd half somewhat, I would have been ordering drug tests if Schalke had been able to keep up that intensity throughout. Ousmane Dembele hit the bar and Kolasinac produced a goal-saving challenge on Pulisic which proved to be enough to secure the point for the Royal Blues. An absorbing game from start to finish, Dortmund really have some work to do on their offensive options.

Prediction – Home Win. Wrong.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim vs Hertha BSC - 1:0

Hoffenheim just keep proving me wrong and if they can do it again next week when I tip them to lose at Bayern then I will be having a cheeky nibble on them to win the Bundesliga. They were excellent value for the win and really should have added at least one more goal, Kramaric was guilty of some profligacy which might have been punished on another day but Hertha were somewhat subdued in the Sunday afternoon game.

Niklas Süle was the man of the day, rising highest to bullet home a header in the 31st minute and despite the chances on both sides that was to prove the winner.

Prediction – Draw. Wrong

1.FC Köln vs Hamburger SV - 3:0

Anthony Modeste just cannot stop scoring and long may it continue. Köln took Hamburg apart with consummate ease on Sunday night and in the process finally landed me a bet after a long winless run.

Modeste could even afford to miss a penalty in the first half and still walk off with a hat-trick! Hamburg once again had a man sent off, this time the culprit was Bobby Wood, who up until that point had been doing an excellent job of pressing from the front. After that Modeste took over, putting the Billy Goats 1 up just after the hour, and then adding 2 late strikes to seal his first ever Bundesliga hat-trick and the coveted IRAIW Bundesliga Player of the week award.

Prediction – Home Win. Spot On.

Betting/Tipping wrap up

  1. 4/9 on my tips this week. Getting better. That takes me to 3.8/9 as an average.

  2. I won a bet! Hooray, but lets not get on the beers just yet as overall I am still down. Hoffenheim and Hertha failed to serve up the goal fest I was expecting so I was delighted when Modeste nailed his hat-trick to secure the Bayern/Leipzig/Köln treble @ 7/2.  After nine weeks my account balance stands at -€2.50 which looks a lot better than last week!

  3. Team of the Weekend Freiburg . Superb display to secure their first away points of the season. Schalke might be a bit aggrieved but they won it last week.

  4. Player of the Weekend : No contest.  Anthony Modeste  scores a hat-trick and misses a penalty, that my friends is entertainment.
