Non League Sides On The Hunt For League Scalps In The First Round Proper Of The FA Cup

Saturday 9th November 2013
As sides from League One and League Two of the Football League enter the competition to join those from the fourth qualifying round Michael Bates takes a look at what is on offer for his weekly coupon.

Non league fans around the country will be getting excited with the thought of their team pitting their wits against league opposition as the first round of the FA Cup will take place over the weekend and we have tried to find a couple of potential shocks for what is always one of the highlights of the entire football season. A £10 Treble with Bet Victor pays an impressive return of £382.40

Hednesford Town to beat Crawley Town – 18/5 Bet Victor

Hednesford Town have been in sensational form in the Conference North and sit pretty at the top of the table having notched six wins in their last seven games and they will head into their FA Cup clash in high spirits as they face a Crawley Town side that have lost their last four games.

Crawley suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Bristol City in midweek and offered very little in the attacking third and with Hednesford bagging another victory they could well be over-priced at 18/5 with Bet Victor, and having not lost a game at home could be a potential banana skin for Crawley and the hosts are the way to go in this intriguing clash.

Cambridge United to beat Bury – 5/2 Bet Victor

Cambridge United may have suffered their first league defeat of the season last weekend when losing 1-0 to Southport, but the Conference Premier table-toppers had been in sparkling form prior to that defeat and they will be another non league club looking to make it through to the second round of the FA Cup and they could well get the better of stuttering Bury side.

Bury are currently hovering above the League Two drop zone and have only won once in their last 10 games, so will be very wary of a U's side who sit pretty at the top of their league, so this could well be another shock result and Bet Victor's 5/2 is more than generous about a Cambridge victory and they can book their place in the next round.

Newport County to beat Braintree Town – 11/8 Bet Victor

Newport County are only one point off the League Two play-offs and will head into their FA Cup clash with non league Braintree Town on Saturday looking to bounce back from a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town, but Justin Edinburgh's side can bag the win and Bet Victor's 11/8 is a very attractive betting proposition.

Braintree are just below the play-off places having bagged a string of four wins together, but they played out a tame goalless draw with lowly Tamworth last weekend and they will need to improve immeasurably if they are to get the better of a County side who certainly have aspirations of promotion to League One come the end of the campaign.
Mick Bates

Mick is a passionate fan of Coventry City and has watched from the sidelines (and had the privilege of seeing the inner workings during an exciting two years in corporate sales there) to see the once mighty Sky Blues fall from the Premier League, then fail to sparkle in the Championship, relegated from League One and wind up in League Two before winning the most important fixture in football competitions - The Checkatrade Trophy final followed by a heart-stopping promotion back to League One.

As well as supporting the Sky Blues, Mick appreciates all levels of football and loves a good book to keep himself entertained as well as a few hours on FIFA or Football Manager as time allows.

He also keeps an eye on all the major English leagues and regularly enjoys a flutter looking for that elusive treble!
