5 candidates to replace Mark Warbuton as Nottingham Forest manager
There was some surprise to the news that Mark Warburton has been sacked by Championship side Nottingham Forest. They had a tough summer with losing their star striker Britt Assombalonga to Middlesbrough and were always going to struggle a tiny bit. Nevertheless, they have made a decent start to the season and are 14th which means they can still climb up the table. They find themselves looking for a new manager and they need someone to bring some more stability to the City Ground. Here are 5 potential candidates for the job:
The Spaniard has been without a job since being sacked by Middlesbrough last season whilst they were struggling in the Premier League. He did do a great job with Boro and guided them to the Play-Off final in his first full season at the club and although they lost it to Norwich City, they bounced back in the next campaign and came second under Karanka. The former Real Madrid assistant manager seems to get linked with every job opening in the Championship at the moment. He turned down the chance to manage Birmingham City earlier in the season. It seems like he is waiting for the right club, could he prospect of managing a big club like Nottingham Forest turn his head?
The former Manchester United midfielder spent 3 seasons at Nottingham Forest as a youngster and is being linked with a return as their manager now. He is currently the assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland. Since retiring in 2006, Keane has managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town and has also had a stint as the assistant manager of Aston Villa. It has been over 6 years since his last role as a manager and he may be interested in the role at Nottingham Forest.
Gus Poyet is another name that has been thrown into the hat. He is currently without a job after recently leaving Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua. He managed Brighton and Hove Albion and Sunderland during his time in England. Since leaving the Black Cats in March 2015, Poyet has gone on to manage AEK Athens, Real Betis and Shanghai. He is a big name in football and would no doubt be interested in managing Nottingham Forest.
He is the son of Nottingham Forest legend Brian Clough and is always getting linked with walking in his father's footsteps and taking the job at Forest. He is currently the manager of Championship side Burton Albion and is somewhat of a club legend at the Brewers. He was offered the job at Forest last season when Mark Warburton was appointed as he did not want to leave Burton in what was their most historic moment in their history playing in the Championship. However, now he may feel he has taken Burton as far as they can go and may be tempted by Forest now.
Stuart Pearce is a Nottingham Forest legend and has been distantly linked with the job opening. However, this is unlikely as he has recently taken up a role with Premier League side West Ham United under David Moyes and may be settled in that role. Pearce last managed Forest in the 2014/15 season and they had a great start to that season but he was later sacked by his beloved club.
