One For The Future - Jean Marie Dongou

Saturday 8th September 2012
It's Round and It's White's youth scout Alex Anderson gives us the lowdown on Barcelona's latest wonderkid Jean Marie Dongou.

The Facts:

Name: Jean Marie Dongou

Age: 17

Nationality: Cameroonian

Club: FC Barcelona B

Position: Striker

The Lowdown:

Jean Marie Dongou could be the next superstar to come out of Barcelona's coveted academy.

A lot of speculation over the summer has surrounded his Barcelona B team mate Gerard Deulofeu who has already featured once for the first team at the age of just 18.

Dongou though is only 17 and it is widely anticipated that it will not be too long before he makes an appearance for the senior squad himself.

Respected Spanish football writer Graham Hunter has said that when he saw Dongou play at 16 he was the best player at that age he's ever seen, a huge compliment from a man who saw Messi play when he was that young!

Dongou plays primarily as a striker but can also play on either wing showing that he has the required versatility to flutter around in the forward positions like Barcelona do so frequently.

He has also been compared to his fellow countryman Samuel Eto'o due to his fearful combination of pace and power, another flattering comparison.

Being touted as both the next Messi and Eto'o at the age of just 17 shows that the people in the know clearly believe Dongou to be a future superstar and he has the game statistics to back this up.

He finished top scorer in the 2012 Next Gen Series with 7 goals and has already played 15 times for the Barcelona B side scoring 3 goals.

That record isn't prolific, but, Messi scored 6 in 22 appearances for the same side and Dongou could easily match that and of course eclipse it if he finds the goal scoring form that saw his stock rise incredibly last season.

Dongou's goal record at international level is much better having scored twice for Cameroon under 20's in just 4 games. If his progression continues at the speed it has been it can't be long before a step up to the senior side beckons either.

During his rise through the Barcelona academy Dongou was prolific at all levels and it is expected that given time he will find the same form for Barcelona B and of course in the future grace the Nou Camp and the international scene with goals galore.
Alex Anderson
Alex started supporting Arsenal at a young age and witnessed many successful years as a boy, even having the pleasure of supporting 'The Invincibles.' On the other side of this, he has also witnessed the long, painful wait for a trophy and the hurt of seeing his idols leaving the club on a regular basis. His favourite people within football are: Wenger, Vieira, Bergkamp, Fabregas and of course Henry whose signed shirt he has hung up on his wall. Robin van Persie would have been on that list also but we all know the reason for his omission. Alex is currently in his second year at the Univeristy of Central Lancashire where he is studying Sports Journalism and he hopes to get a job within the industry on finishing his degree.
