Owen Coyle sacking makes a mockery of idiots like me

Wednesday 22nd February 2017
Owen Coyle has been sacked by Blackburn Rovers with the team entrenched in the Championship relegation zone. His firing makes a mockery of idiots like me.
There was a time in history where the young, hip, upcoming British manager was not the heralded hero of the South Coast or the coarsely spoken Ginger Mourinho. No. Not too long ago, the name on the tip of everyone's tongue was Owen Coyle, and my word was he a wanted man.

Orchestrating a miraculous promotion with Burnley, Coyle was known for his expansive style and meteoric success. His Burnley team were, for the most part, a team of few big names. His success was built on adept tactics and a gritty work ethic. It was players like Graham Alexander and Clarke Carlisle that the Lancashire team built their house on. Or at least that was until Coyle decided to jump ship.

Amid a relegation saving season, a battle that would ultimately get the better of Burnley, the Scot would be headhunted by Bolton Wanderers, they themselves in the midst of a fight for survival. Coyle would proceed to save Burnley's great rivals at the expense of the Claret and Blues and begun building the team in his image once again.

It was at this point that Coyle was at the height of his powers. With it, the frenzy was also at its highest, and I was one who was warped into the dreams and ambitions of disillusioned fans.

On March 23rd, 2011, this Bleacher Report article was published regarding Owen Coyle, Arsene Wenger and their respective futures. It was a far more popular opinion than many would perhaps have you believe and I, rather regrettably, was one of them.

At the time, Wenger was suffering his sixth straight trophyless season. He was tactically naive and unwilling in the transfer market. Coyle was seen as the much-needed fresh face at a stagnating club.

How wrong we all were!

Bolton was relegated in 2012 and by October the next season, it was announced that Coyle's contract with the club had been terminated. Since then Coyle has managed three different teams in two different countries with only one result; failure. He was sacked just nine months after being hired by Wigan after Roberto Martinez was swooned by Everton; he struggled through a little over a year with the Houston Dynamos and has now been fired from Blackburn Rovers just 37 games into his tenure.

It was no easy task for Coyle to take on. With the club strangled by the Venky ownership that suffocated all of the finances and all of the support out of the organisation, Coyle had little to work with and even less to look forward to. Nonetheless, Coyle has proven at a vast array of clubs, that his managerial magic dust may not have been so wonderful.

Wenger, meanwhile, has proceeded to lift two FA Cups and, despite his reign still bursting with controversy and criticism, has certainly enjoyed greater success than the man touted to replace him. Thank God, that Arsenal never listened to idiots like me!
