Payet's Possibilities

Wednesday 25th January 2017
The January transfer window can be a funny time. It's the footballing equivalent of 100 families frantically running around the supermarket looking for all the hot deals, only to come away empty-handed.

One such deal is that of West Ham's wantaway Dimitri Payet, who looks set to leave the Hammers before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, despite only scoring twice in 18 league appearances this season. He has proved talisman when helping his teammates, however, with an impressive 7 assists. Only Kevin De Bruyne (9), Christian Eriksen (8) and Matt Phillips (8) have managed more.

His side's poor form and flirt with relegation probably has a lot to do with the star man's strong desire for departure, but wherever he goes next, he'll have to make an immediate impression.
There has been an awful lot of attention directed towards the French international, so we're compiling a list of the 5 most likely clubs that the 29-year-old could end up serving by deadline day.

  1. Marseille . The Frenchman's former club - who sold the player to the Hammers for just £10.7m in 2015 - have already put in two bids, the first worth £19m and the second somewhere in the region of £20m-£22m, and are apparently preparing a third bid of £25m in the hope it will be enough to acquire the playmaker's services.

  2. Arsenal . The North-London club are reportedly looking to bolster their attacking options, with flop Lucas Perez failing to make an impression, and usual winger Alexis Sanchez instead moving further up the pitch to lead the Gooners' attack, it seems that a little bit of magic could be just what they need from a player of the French international's caliber.

  3. Manchester United . The Red Devils believe that Payet could provide that extra quality needed to prepare them into the top-4, after a disappointing first half to the season. With Martial and Lingard not living up to last season's form, and a general lack of experience on the wings, the French playmaker could be exactly the player to re-inspire the Theatre of Dreams.

  4. Chelsea . Antonio Conte is said to be looking for another attacking midfielder to add to his squad depth. With the departure of Oscar earlier in the month, he is left with only Hazard, Pedro and Willian able to play behind the in-form Diego Costa, who already has 14 goals to his name this campaign. It's safe to say if he did leave for Stamford bridge, he'd probably be nothing more than a bench-warmer, and we don't think he'd settle for that after being the star man at his current club.

  5. Hebei China Fortune . The Chinese outfit had supposedly offered the Frenchman £26m a year to convert to the Chinese Super League, but reports suggest that West Ham's number 27 has declined the offer in order to remain competitive. If none of the other deals get done, however, the Chinese Super League could just see another big name player make a big-money move before the end of the month, having already snapped up Oscar for £60m and Carlos Tevez, who is getting paid an insane £615,000 a week! (That's £1 a second!)
