Over the decades, Africa has prospered in football. Every generation produces stars, from George Weah to Roger Milla on down to Samuel Eto'o, Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure. Those stars make it big in Europe but their countries remain perennial underdogs.

Now, political instability, famine and other hardships see more Africans migrate to Europe and elsewhere. Their children grow up learning football in a foreign land. Sometimes the best return to their homeland. Other times, they don't.

As a result, the African Cup of Nations suffers, robbed of many glittering talents. Maybe the tournament could approach the Copa America and Euros' prestige if more African stars featured.

Here are ten who are sorely missed.
