Are Real Madrid missing Gareth Bale?

Friday 20th January 2017

In the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey, Madrid won their first leg against Sevilla 3-0 but the second leg ended 3-3. Enough to get through but things were starting to get a little bit edgy for the Spanish giants.

The next fixture was up against Sevilla again but in La Liga. Real Madrid were not their usual selves. A penalty from Ronaldo gave them a glimpse of possibly a turn around in fortune but they were denied by the efforts of the Sevilla side. Ramos scoring an own goal and Jovetic getting the winner in added time was adding insult to injury.

The following game was the last 8 in the Copa Del Rey. Madrid had been drawn to Celta Vigo. Zidane fielded a pretty much full strength side with players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Modric, Kroos and Sergio Ramos to name a few.

The deadlock was broken in the 64th minute by Iago Aspas with a cross in the box by Theo Bongonda who found acres of space. Marcelo tried to clear the ball with a fancy heel flick but didn't catch the ball right. It fell to Aspas in the box who was able to make it 1-0.

Marcelo made up for his mistake with an incredible volley from 15 yards out just five minutes later. Modric crossed the ball into the box only to be cleared by the Celta Vigo defence.  Marcelo saw the opportunity and smashed the volley to make it even again.

Just one minute later a lack of concentration by Real Madrid gave the ball away to Iago Aspas who threaded a pass to Jonny Castro. Through on goal Castro was able to make it 2-1. Benzema, Kovacic and Alvaro Morata came on for Madrid but were unable to make any difference to the game.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
