Season Preview 2012-13 – Morecambe Interview

Morecambe have strengthened their ranks with Richard Brodie from Fleetwood. Phil Jevons was allowed to move on by Jim Bentley, who enters his second season as Morecambe boss. The Shrimps came 14th last season, and would love to bring promotion to The Globe this season.

It's Round and It's White spoke to Morecambe fan Mathew Seage (@Seagie85) to assess the team's chances this time around.

How did last season measure up, compared to your expectations?

I think most fans were more than happy with a 15th place finish last season although expectations were raised with the excellent start to the season we made with the 6-0 demolition of Crawley being a highlight.

What do you think of your club's summer transfer activity, are there more arrivals/exits on the horizon?

Funds are limited so there hasn't been an awful new arrivals but Andrew Wright from Scunthorpe looks the most impressive so far. He's a holding midfielder who has made a positive impact in pre season and was excellent against Blackpool in our League Cup win last weekend. Robbie Threlfall has arrived from Bradford to replace Lawrence Wilson at left back who decided to move to Rotherham and local lad Andreas Arestidou has joined to back up Barry Roche for the season after being released by Preston. Richard Brodie is the most intriguing of our signings after spending the previous two seasons playing for clubs that ended up Blue Square Premier champions in Crawley and Fleetwood but has never kicked a ball in the Football League to date. He has a good record at non league level but is also a bit of a hot head so there's a real chance he'll end up with more cards than goals during his six month loan spell!

What would be a dream new season for you?

Promotion obviously.

What would be your worst nightmare?

Finishing in the bottom 2.

Who will be your most important player/s this season?

As mentioned previously I think Andrew Wright is going to be a great addition to anchor the midfield and provide a bit of protection to the back four. Our experienced players such as Nick Fenton, Barry Roche and Kevin Ellison need to stay fit and have good seasons and it would be good to see the likes of Lewis Alessandra, Jordan Burrow and Jack Redshaw step up in the attacking department as they have all shown great potential over the past season or so but are still learning.

Any players you would happily see the back of?

Unfortunately I have to say Danny Carlton. He's a legend at the club for scoring the goal that got us promoted to the Football League but these days he offers very little and his substitute appearance at Blackpool on Sunday was nothing short of disastrous. For some reason he was given a two year contract at the start of last season and I suspect this is the only reason he's still here as I'm fairly sure Jim Bentley would have released him if he could.

Do you have the best manager for the job?

Definitely. Bentley is a young manager with a true passion for the game and the club. Hopefully he'll be in charge for many years to come.

Opposition players that you respect?

There's plenty around the league that always impress me when I see them but you've got to be impressed with some of the signings Fleetwood have made this year such as Jon Parkin, David Ball and Damian Johnson. They should all be playing at a higher level really but obviously money talks!

Opposition players that you despise?

Can't say there's any that I despise. Dean Howell is a bit of a joke figure at the club for a truly horrendous season he spent at Morecambe in 2003/2004 but he seems to have converted himself into a decent left back these days rather than the headless chicken of a left winger he was with us.

Best away fans/ground in your league?

Rotherham's new one looks impressive and obviously you've got Valley Parade. No idea about fans to be honest, football fans are football fans aren't they? There's not much difference between them other than choice of club.

Which teams do you really want to beat this season?

Fleetwood, local derby and this season's big spenders so it would be nice to put them in their place.

Finally, where do you honestly think you will finish?

I'd be happy with a similar position to last season but wouldn't be surprised if we finished a few places higher.
