Have we seen the last of James Wilson in a Manchester United shirt?

Saturday 3rd December 2016
The name James Wilson will definitely ring a bell or two in the minds of the Manchester United faithful. Popularly known for his brace against Hull City, in a game that didn't mean much for the Red Devils in a rather forgettable 2013/2014 season, Wilson's United career has stalled in recent seasons.

Comparison with past United greats began ringing in and regardless of whom became manager in the following season, the sky looked the limit for the Englishman after scoring twice on his debut.
The season didn't go as planned both for United and for Wilson as Louis Van Gaal brought along with him a possession-based style of football which was boring, to say the very least.

Wilson played a total of 17 games, the majority of which came from the bench. He did manage to score 2 goals.

Last season was particularly disappointing for the 20-year old. With the Red Devils electing to send him out on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion, despite the fact that the club had only two recognised strikers in Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial at the start of the previous season.

However, Wilson to his credit, made a good impression while out on loan at Brighton, playing 29 games in all and finding the back of the net on 5 occasions. Brighton manager, Chris Houghton was particularly impressed by the young striker and told Tribal Football that he was "delighted with him (Wilson)".

Wilson revealed United boss, Jose Mourinho, influenced his decision to join Derby County this past summer while speaking to the Rams club website at the start of the season, in his words:

"I had a few meetings with Jose before heading out here and he said that he wants to see me playing games and scoring goals"

"I want to play games, I want to score goals I want to gain more experience and my focus is entirely on Derby County at the moment."

With Marcus Rashford rapidly becoming a fixture for Manchester United and the expected renewal of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's contract at the end of the season, a run-in on United's bench looks likely for Wilson, a regular starting berth looks a bit like a distant dream for the youngster at the moment.

It quite frankly hasn't worked out for the England U-21 international at Manchester United and it may not be unwise of him to leave the club permanently.

Wilson is back in Manchester as he continues to recover from the knee injury he sustained during training at Derby County.
