Serge Gnabry: Arsenal's Next Young Gunner?

Thursday 15th March 2012
Young German midfielder Serge Gnabry signed for Arsenal from VfB Stuttgart in July 2011 when he had only just turned 16. We are now in March the following year and Gnabry has already played five times for Arsenal Reserves in games against Fulham, Swansea, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea and West Brom scoring twice in the process.

Gnabry grabbed his first goal at Reserve League level in an away game against Swansea and his second in a game at home to West Brom adapting to the new surroundings almost instantaneously.

His impressive performances are made better when you have a look at the players that Gnabry has played with, and not in any way been overshadowed by. In the game against West Brom he lined up with; Andre Santos, Johan Djourou, Ignasi Miquel, Carl Jenkinson, Nico Yennaris, Park Chu-Young and Marouane Chamakh who have all turned out for the senior side this year.

Gnabry starred in the early stages of the match scoring the second goal in a 3-0 win after Chamakh who failed to score, again, had a shot saved by the keeper.

For a 16 year old, Gnabry has a physique before his time, he is a powerful midfielder yet skillful with it. He is progressing at a speed much quicker than expected and he has a goal scoring touch to go with his physical attributes.

Two goals in five games is a good record for a midfielder and he has also scored two goals in three games for the under-18s before being fast tracked into the reserve squad. In an Arsenal shirt he has managed a goal every two games which is an impressive stat that most strikers would be jealous of.

Rumors suggest that Wenger was casting an eye over Gnabry in the win against West Brom and with ‘The Professor's' ability to spot a talent the young German could make his way into the first team fold over the summer friendlies and possibly the early Carling Cup ties of next season.

That is what happened with Jack Wilshere who was the last Arsenal player to feature so predominantly for the reserve squad at the age of 16. Look at him now!

Gnabry is obviously not the complete article yet but he is likely to be one the most accomplished footballers of his age in the Premier League, if not the World at the moment.

Remember the name as Gnabry could be the next super star to come through the ranks at Arsenal.
Alex Anderson
Alex started supporting Arsenal at a young age and witnessed many successful years as a boy, even having the pleasure of supporting 'The Invincibles.' On the other side of this, he has also witnessed the long, painful wait for a trophy and the hurt of seeing his idols leaving the club on a regular basis. His favourite people within football are: Wenger, Vieira, Bergkamp, Fabregas and of course Henry whose signed shirt he has hung up on his wall. Robin van Persie would have been on that list also but we all know the reason for his omission. Alex is currently in his second year at the Univeristy of Central Lancashire where he is studying Sports Journalism and he hopes to get a job within the industry on finishing his degree.
