Smith Returns to Rangers

Sunday 19th June 2011
You read it correctly. Smith has returned to Rangers, but it's not Walter, It's former SFA chief executive, Gordon Smith. He has taken over the director of football job.

Smith has won the treble with Rangers in 1977/1978 and served the SFA from 2007 till 2010, so has great experience in several different aspects of football.

The former chief will oversee the Academy, scouting and will be involved in the transfer window alongside Ally McCoist.

Along with Smith, Owner Craig Whyte has brought in former Queens Park Rangers commercial director and deputy managing director Ali Russell as director of operations and commercial activity.

Whyte had this to say on the official website,"I'm delighted that Gordon and Ali are with us and I think they will be key appointments for us.

Gordon has a wealth of experience in football administration from his role with the SFA and his contacts in Uefa."

Ali did a great job at QPR and he will be working with the management team we have at Ibrox.

"Due to my many business commitments I am unable to work at Rangers every day so Ali will be carrying out that aspect of things."

It's not going to be an easy task, what with Celtic trying to prevent Rangers from getting 4 in a row and Rangers trying to rebuild a severely depleted squad. But Smith is no stranger to turbulent times.  Having dealt with  the appointing of  managers, George Burley and Craig Levein, as well as the infamous 2009 "boozegate" scandal.

I, for one wish both Smith and Russel good luck in their time at Rangers and hope that they can take the club so new highs.
