Sunderland Spending

Friday 8th July 2011
Steve Bruce is really going for it during this transfer window. John O'Shea and Wes Brown have been signed and David Vaughan has completed his move, from Blackpool, too.

These three players should really solidify the defensive side of the Sunderland team. O'Shea is a superbly adaptable player, very versatile and I'm surprised that Manchester United have let him go. Where defending is concerned, he can fit in anywhere.

Last season Sunderland finished the campaign without any fit strikers. This is all change too, what with Wickham signing and Ji Dong-won. If Shane Long is also signed then their firepower should be bolstered to a competitive level.

The striker signings, for me, are risks though. Wickham has shown promise but he may not ever find his feet at Premier League level. Ji Dong-won could be the best eastern import since Manchester United's Park, but then again, he might not be. No eastern league will be anywhere near the quality we get week in, week out, in the Premiership.

What these signings have though is potential. With the right drive and more consistent form they'll be heading for Europe, for sure.
