The biggest Premier League fixtures in August

Thursday 28th July 2016
The Premier League kicks off on Saturday 13th August. This season promises to be the most competitive we have ever seen; each of the 20 clubs will start the season with high expectations, and that will produce some enthralling games. We take a look at the Premier League fixtures to look out for in August.

Arsenal - Liverpool, Sunday 14th August

Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool; it's a difficult opening fixture for both teams, but both sides will fancy their chances going into this game. It ended goalless when they met at the Emirates last season; however, expect an attacking game this time around, with a few goals.

Arsene Wenger's side will expect to produce a good performance in their first game of the season; they lost 2-0 to West Ham United in last season's opening game at the Emirates, and the players will be desperate to avoid a repeat of that. Liverpool have reasons to feel optimistic about the new Premier League season; Jurgen Klopp is taking the club in the right direction, and a victory away to Arsenal would be the perfect start to this campaign.

Chelsea - West Ham United, Monday 15th August

Chelsea's first Premier League game of the season sees them face West Ham at Stamford Bridge. This fixture ended in a 2-2 draw last season and this game will be just as close, as both sides are capable of securing all three points. Chelsea will start the game as favourites, but West Ham are capable of beating anyone on their day.
Chelsea have to put last season's dismal performances behind them; they have entered a new era under Antonio Conte, they need to show signs of improvement, and winning this game would set them on the right track. West Ham were brilliant in Slaven Bilic's first season in charge of the club, they finished in their highest ever Premier League position, and they will want to get this season off to a good start.

Manchester United - Southampton, Friday 19th August

Manchester United will entertain Southampton at Old Trafford in their first home game of the season. Both teams have a new manager in charge, so it's difficult to know what to expect when these two sides meet. Manchester United will start the game as firm favourites, but Southampton are capable of causing an upset.

All eyes will be on Old Trafford for this game, as Jose Mourinho looks for a strong start to his Manchester United career in front of his home supporters. It's an important game for Mourinho, one he will be determined to win. Southampton also have a new manager; Claude Puel will be hoping to guide his side to another successful Premier League campaign, and defeating Manchester United would be an excellent start to his reign.

Leicester City - Arsenal, Saturday 20th August

Premier League champions Leicester City face a huge test in their first home game of the season against last season's runners-up Arsenal; this encounter produced seven goals last season - ending 5-2 to Arsenal. This game could also help determine which of these two sides has the best chance of mounting a title challenge.

Claudio Ranieri's side were surprise winners of the Premier League title just a few months ago. N'Golo Kante has since left the club, but the Leicester players will still start the season full of confidence. Arsenal have to begin this season strongly if they are to have any chance of ending their Premier League title drought, a victory for Arsene Wenger's side over the current champions would send out a message of intent.

Tottenham - Liverpool, Saturday 27th August

The first game of the season at White Hart Lane will see Tottenham host Liverpool. This fixture finished goalless last season; which was a surprise considering the attacking talent on display. Both of these sides play a similar style of attacking football, so expect an entertaining game when these two sides meet.
Mauricio Pochettino worked wonders with his squad last season to earn them a third place finish in the Premier League. Tottenham now have to aim to reach the next level and these are the types of games they must win. Liverpool are entertaining to watch under Jurgen Klopp, his teams play the game in the right way. This game will be a real test for Liverpool, but one they are capable of winning.

Manchester City - West Ham United, Sunday 28th August

Manchester City will be hoping for a positive start to the season. In their third game of this campaign, they come up against West Ham at the Etihad, and they will be looking to avenge the 2-1 loss they suffered in this fixture last September. Whilst West Ham will travel to Manchester in confident mood.

Pep Guardiola will face a big test when his side hosts West Ham; Manchester City will have to play at their best to secure all three points. Guardiola can't afford to lose home games if he wants to win the Premier League title in his first season. West Ham will believe they can cause an upset at the Etihad, they're a dangerous side away from home, and Slaven Bilic's team has the potential to improve on last season.
