The Bundesliga Preview - Unbeaten runs looking to be broken

Friday 30th September 2016
After missing the weekend games in Gameweek 5, we are back for Gameweek 6. Mark Dannell previews the action.

Gameweek 5 Results

RB Leipzig vs FC Augsburg

There are still four unbeaten teams in the Bundesliga after five matches and while Köln will do exceptionally well to keep their “0”, RB should have more than enough to extend their streak against Augsburg. Oliver Burke is settling in nicely, a goal on his full debut last week after just 6 minutes endeared him to the Leipzig faithful immediately.

Augsburg picked up a hard earned and very welcome three points against Darmstadt on Saturday last week thanks to a goal from Alfred Finnbogason, Dirk Schuster getting one over on his old club.

Prediction – Home Win

FC Bayern vs 1. FC Köln

Despite Bayern taking a tough loss to Atletico in the Champions League this week there will not be many betting against another home win. They had to leave it really late to beat a dogged Hamburg on Saturday which ultimately cost Bruno Labbadia his job. Bayern had 65% possession, 17 shots and made 498 passes in total so it was unsurprising to see Kimmich grab the winner.

Köln fought back from the early RB goal to grab a deserved equalizer on Sunday and will hope to provide Bayern with their toughest test of the season so far. The problem with playing Bayern is that six of the players in the team are completely interchangeable and all have very different attributes. Neuer/Lahm/both CB and Lewandowski will all play but the rest could be made up of any number of combinations. Good luck Peter Stöger!

Prediction – Home Win

Hertha BSC vs Hamburger SV

This is a rotten game to pick a result in. If it had been last week, a clear home win. However, the improved display from Hamburg, a new Trainer in Markus Gisdol and the sudden defensive frailty of Hertha leads me to pick a draw to kick start Hamburg's rise to lower mid table again.

As mentioned Hertha shipped six goals in the week, three to Bayern is no surprise, but three to Frankfurt after twice having the lead at 2-1 and 3-2 is a disappointment. Some work required on the training pitch this week for Pai Dardai and his team.

Prediction – Draw

FC Ingolstadt 04 vs 1899 TSG Hoffenheim

No one has been talking about Ingolstadt with the terrible starts from Schalke, Hamburg and Werder Bremen but with Werder winning a game and Hamburg replacing their manager the “Schanzer” have moved a couple of spots up the list. In truth, it's been pretty uninspiring stuff so far from the Audi backed team, but as I mentioned in the season preview they appear to have fallen into the trap of standing still while near everyone else moves on.

Hoffenheim are still undefeated and notched their first win last week over struggling Schalke. I think they might just pick up another one here which would be a wonderful start for the Kraichgauer.

Prediction – Away Win

SV Darmstadt 98 vs SV Werder Bremen

A win! Werder turned the game on its head in the final five minutes to secure a come from behind win against Wolfsburg last week, well deserved too. If Alexander Nouri can keep coaxing this level of performance out of the team he might just keep the job on a permanent basis.

Darmstadt slipped to a loss against Augsburg in a largely rotten game last Saturday but this is the kind of game where they are likely to pick up a point at home.

Prediction – Draw

SC Freiburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Two teams that have positively surprised me this year so far meet on Saturday afternoon. Freiburg are fresh off a loss at Dortmund, no shame in that, and they delivered another courageous performance, restricting BVB to “just” three goals. That is three defeats on the road now but two wins at home.

Frankfurt played out the game of the week last time, twice coming from behind to draw with Hertha BSC 3:3! Now they are riding high in the table so it will be interesting to see how they deal with the pressure of being favourites for this one.

Prediction – Draw

Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs Borussia Dortmund

The Saturday evening game is the undoubted tie of the week. Both were in Champions League action Tuesday night with draws in differing fashions, Dortmund equalizing late on against the might of Real while Leverkusen were pegged back in the final minute to make their task in the group much more difficult.

Dortmund just have more quality in depth and with fresher players available they should be able to take the points on offer despite the return to form of Chicharito, fresh off a hat-trick last week.

Prediction – Away Win

VfL Wolfsburg vs Mainz 05

Rotten results for both clubs last time out. Mainz lost a five-goal thriller at home to Leverkusen while Wolfsburg suffered the “new manager effect” as Werder rebounded to pick up their first win of the season.

Mainz led at half time and contrived to chuck it away, Martin Schmidt was almost critical of the way his side approached the second half. Expect a few changes from him.

Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking is 3rd favourite for the sack now although regular readers of this column will know I feel he should have gone last year. In truth he should be 2nd on the list after Markus Weinzerl of Schalke, Wolfsburg has so much talent but he appears completely powerless to harness it. A draw here will prolong the agony.

Prediction – Draw

FC Schalke 04 vs Borussia Mönchengladbach

I feel a bit for Markus Weinzierl. Schalke seems to be a poisoned chalice for coaches, five straight losses and a slightly unkind fixture list but something stinks in Gelsenkirchen. Europa League action on Thursday night is not really what he needs but a home fixture against Red Bull Salzburg could restore a bit of confidence.

Speaking of confidence, Mönchengladbach put up a good display against Barcelona on Wednesday night, luckily for them at home. I've talked before about the away day blues of BMG and they grabbed a point in Gameweek 4 away to RB Leipzig. Another point will do here and Schalke would be delighted with that.
Prediction – Draw

Betting Preview

I will be having 2 5€ bets every week and keeping a running total of my profit and loss. After Gameweek 4 I am 15.00€ up after landing bets in two straight weeks!

  1. I have gone a bit draw crazy in my predictions this week and you can get some nice odds there. I'll have the 13/1 on offer for draws in the Wolfsburg/Schalke ties.

  2. Leipzig/Bayern/Hoffenheim is a tasty 13/2. Bit of a risk on Hoffenheim but I am still in profit!
