The good and no-good dirty low down on each group for World Cup Match Day 3

Monday 25th June 2018

Nothin' you can't handle
Nothin' you ain't got
Put your money on the table
And drive it off the lot
Turn on that old love light
And turn a "maybe" to a "yes"
Same old schoolboy game got you into this mess

Boz Scaggs wasn't thinking about the World Cup when he wrote, recorded and released The Lowdown in 1976. He could well have, though. Thirty-two nations have put their money on the table. Only 16 will drive off the group stage lot. We're two games into the phase. The Round of 16 is taking shape but there is still much left to decide in the final 16 group matches. Here's how things look.

The former editor of World Football Columns, Martin contributes frequently to Stretty News and is the author of the short story collection strange bOUnce. He has appeared in several other blogs which, sadly, have ceased to exist. He is old and likes to bring out defunct. Although football is his primary passion, the geezer enjoys many sports and pop culture forms. Expect them to intrude upon his meanderings for It's Round and It's White.
