Three goalkeepers Napoli should target before the transfer window closes

Tuesday 8th August 2017
There is no question that Napoli needs to improve their depth in the goalkeeper position. Pepe Reina is the clear starter, but the club needs another reliable starter in case the Spaniard goes down with an injury. With that in mind, here are three options that Napoli could target during the remainder of the transfer window.

Napoli have no doubts on who will start between the posts during the upcoming Serie A campaign. As it has been the case during the past few years, Pepe Reina is set to handle the goalkeeping duties once again. But what would happen if Reina suffers an injury? Or if his form starts to decrease? After all, we have to remember that the Spaniard is 34-years-old already. Napoli does need to find a suitable replacement.

Guillermo Ochoa emerged as an option, but the Mexican international chose to sign with Standard Liege instead. But that does not mean that there are no suitable options out there for the Italian side. With that in mind, here are three goalkeepers that would undoubtedly boost Napoli between the posts for the 2017-18 campaign.

Geronimo Rulli

Guillermo Rulli has been linked with a move to Napoli during the entire summer. And no one could blame Napoli for having the interest in his services. After all, Rulli has proven himself as a capable starter in Spain playing for Real Sociedad. And most experts believe he is one of the top young goalkeepers in the world.

There are however several roadblocks Napoli would have to avoid in order to land the Argentinian. First of all, Rulli is under contract with Sociedad and they have would to negotiate with the Spanish club. However, the star goalkeeper is also owned by Manchester City. The Citizens have the option to match any offer for this player. So basically - if City wants him, they can have him no matter what Napoli offer.

Having said, Rulli makes a lot of sense for Napoli. He would represent a massive upgrade over Reina. If the situation changes completely and Reina suddenly becomes the backup goalkeeper with Rulli as the starter, Napoli would become an even more dangerous team. They would have a defence solid that would be enough to battle Juventus for the Serie A crown.

Jasper Cillessen

The second alternative players also plys his trade in Spain. The main difference Cillessen has over Rulli is that he is not an everyday player. He has enough talent to be one, though. That could be the deciding factor on maybe pursuing a move out of his current club.

The former Ajax starter has been FC Barcelona's backup goalkeeper behind Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. And that situation is not likely to change anytime soon. While Cillessen remains part of the Dutch National Team, he needs to play on a more consistent basis to continue his development.

Who says he wouldn't accomplish that at Napoli? Just like Rulli, Cillessen would also represent an upgrade over Reina. Let's be clear - there is a reason why he landed at Barcelona in the first place. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona want to sell the Dutch player or not. Napoli do not lose anything if they make an enquiry to sign him. Maybe Cillessen wants to leave and become the starter somewhere else and he is talented enough to thrive at San Paolo Stadium.

Claudio Bravo

Okay, this one is a bit out of the box, but it makes sense. Claudio Bravo is under contract with Manchester City and Pep Guardiola has said he will be counting on him for the upcoming season. But after seeing Ederson play during the preseason, it is not crazy to think the former Benfica shot stopper will become the starting goalkeeper in no time. That is not a disrespect Bravo's ability, but maybe he is better suited to play elsewhere, and a fresh start would be the best scenario for him.

Bravo has been a regular starter for the Chilean National Team and he has been pretty good for the most part. He did not have a good year with Manchester City, but he had two impressive campaigns with FC Barcelona. He is proven at the top level, while he might not fit in England, he should not have issues playing in Spain.

The biggest problem with Bravo is his age. The Chilean is already 34 and is only eight months older than Reina. So even though he would be a slight upgrade, he would be a stop-gap solution and Napoli would probably find themselves in the market once again in one or two more years.

All three would be solid options, though. Rulli and Cillessen would be quality signings for a team that needs a long-term solution between the posts.
