Three Left-Backs Arsenal can sign to replace Nacho Monreal.

Tuesday 28th February 2017
Something has happened that made me reconsider everything about Arsenal's current squad. Nacho Monreal turned 31, meaning that six players in the first team starting XI  are 27 and above. That doesn't even include long-term pensioners Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker. A lot of the team are on their last legs and it's time for Wenger to start his succession planning.

They say with age comes wisdom, but for Nacho Monreal it has instead brought a string of poor performances. Perhaps the Spaniard has a lost step of pace but that doesn't excuse his poor positioning that's cost Arsenal several points.

Here are 3 young left-backs that Arsène Wenger should sign as a replacement for Nacho Monreal.

3. Ricardo Rodriguez

As an Arsenal fan, it almost feels like we've been linked with Ricardo Rodriguez since the beginning of time. The speculation has since then become tedious but it's still very exciting, the Swiss full-back is a very accomplished defender. For a 24-year old the left-back is already more positionally disciplined than Monreal. Rodriguez is never the type of full-back to leave his CBs exposed or vulnerable, he finds the right balance between attack and defence down that left flank. He's more than happy to sit back and just help circulate the ball around the back as long as it ensures safety, something Wenger doesn't enforce. Alongside his competent defensive skills, Rodriguez is also a specialist from dead-ball positions, something Arsenal severely lacks. The Wolfsburg star player would also surprisingly only cost Arsenal £19m as that's the release clause stated in his contract.

2. Luke Shaw

I know the likelihood of this one is literally next to zero but Wenger must at least try and resurrect the 21-year old's career. Luke Shaw has only made seven Premier League appearances for Manchester United this season after falling out of favour with José Mourinho. This is just another typical player-manager fall out in another disastrous Mourinho campaign. Everywhere the Portuguese coach goes he inexplicably falls out with stars players at the club. Now following the latest Mourinho hurricane, Shaw has been left on the outskirts of the squad, with a starting place nowhere near in sight. As England's best left-back since Ashley Cole, Luke Shaw is a special talent that needs to be playing regularly in his early 20s. And who better than Arsène Wenger himself to nourish the talent out of England's most exciting prospect.

1.José Gayà

It's no secret that Gary Neville left Valencia in a right mess last season, since his tenure the team have not recovered. Now that The Oranges are struggling on the pitch and lagging behind financially, it's become apparent that none of their most prized assets are safe. At the young age of 21, José Gayà is already one of the hottest talents in world football. The Spaniard is quick, intelligent, good in 1v1 situations and positionally aware, he's the kind of full-back that could compliment any defensive system. At Arsenal, Wenger relies heavily on his full-backs to continually provide width in attacks and to be good 1v1 whilst defending, Gayà would be perfect for this philosophy. Over the past 2 years, injuries have kept Gaya's development on the down low but make no mistake about it, all the top European clubs are following him closely.

Arsenal fan with ample amounts of passion for both Cristiano Ronaldo & Real Madrid. I'm one of those bandwagonist hipster fans that will claim to know everything about football, but only watches the El Clasico outside of the Premier League. Forgive me, I'm trying. Oh yeah, #WengerOut.
