Week 21 Predictions 14/01/12

Saturday 14th January 2012
It's taken a while to get going but this is shaping up to be one of the best ever Premier League seasons. The title race is wide open and so is the fight for survival. It keeps getting better and better. Here are my predictions for this week:

Aston Villa 1-1 Everton

I can't see many Villa or Everton fans being happy with how their teams have performed so far. They both followed up good away wins with awful home performances before the FA Cup and you can't say either side is safe from relegation yet. For me, there isn't a lot between the two and that should show on the pitch. Neither will be pleased with just a point but I think avoiding another defeat will be more important.

Blackburn 1-2 Fulham

This one was a draw at Craven Cottage after a great defensive performance from Blackburn. With Samba confirming that he wants to leave, I don't think the defence will be anywhere near as organised as before. Blackburn need to be picking up points in games like this, they are only 3 points behind Wolves in 16th and can still stay up with ease if they can put a run together. However, that is easier said than done and Fulham should win here.

Chelsea 1-1 Sunderland

When first written down, I had this as 2-1 Chelsea. Then I spent the rest of the day saying that I expected a draw and was surprised when I saw that that wasn't my original prediction. I changed it and I hope I don't regret it. Chelsea have not been brilliant lately and I think Sunderland can cause them some real problems. I can't imagine they will return from Stamford Bridge with all the points but one point certainly isn't a stretch of the imagination.

Liverpool 1-1 Stoke

If Liverpool play the same team here that they put out against City, this will be a dire game. I don't think it would have been a great advert anyway but Liverpool lacked that extra spark without Suarez. That being said, Gerrard should be able to roam a lot more than at the Etihad and if Liverpool do win, he will be at the centre of it.

Man Utd 2-1 Bolton

I'm not sure this will be as one sided as it was at the Reebok but that doesn't mean Bolton will be in this game. United have lost two on the bounce in the league and I don't think that the win at City in the cup will give the confidence boost that some people say it will. Surely United won't lose two games in a row at home to teams in the relegation zone?

Tottenham 3-1 Wolves

The Spurs train just keeps on going. There seems little that can stop it and, without a doubt, Spurs are now in the title race. Part of me wishes United would slip up this weekend just to see Spurs go second. I see another comfortable win for them here.

West Brom 1-1 Norwich

West Brom won with an early goal at Carrow Road in September and this will be another close match. Both of these teams will stay up and despite the difference between them in the table, a good win for West Brom would put them above Norwich. I don't see enough between them to give the win to either so a draw it is from me.

Newcastle 1-2 QPR

The script seems written for Mark Hughes return to management. Newcastle still in a bit of an injury crisis and with their top scorer having left for the Cup of Nations, seem a good side for the honeymoon period to start against. Newcastle are still a good side without Ba but I think the new manager factor will edge it for QPR.

Swansea 1-1 Arsenal

This is the prediction I am most sure about. The game at the Emirates was close and everyone knows by now how good Swansea are at home. They don't concede many but I think Arsenal will get one. Swansea will get one as well and it will end all square in Wales.

Wigan 0-2 Man City

As bad as City were after they conceded in the FA Cup, they were brilliant in the second half. I truly believed they were going to get a draw and are unlucky to be out of the cup. This performance made me more annoyed when watching their Carling Cup performance. City need to win here. They can't afford to be another side to drop points at Wigan. I believe they will win and keep the pace in the title race.

My guest this week gave his prediction for this set of fixtures back in September and got a very respectable 7 points. Please welcome Iain Dennison back to have another go at the reverse of those early games. Here are his predictions:

Villa 1-0 Everton

Blackburn 1-1 Fulham

Chelsea 2-1 Sunderland

Liverpool 2-2 Stoke

United 3-0 Bolton

Spurs 3-0 Wolves

West Brom 0-1 Norwich

Newcastle 1-1 QPR

Swansea 1-2 Arsenal

Wigan 1-3 City

Very interesting to see that none are the same as mine, especially the Swansea-Arsenal game.

I will be back next week with more predictions for this rollercoaster season.
