Can Arsenal replace Mesut Ozil in January?

Saturday 21st October 2017
For Arsenal fans, the distant worry has become a near reality. As of today, the strongest rumour coming out of England is that Mesut Ozil will be joining Manchester United in January.

The German has his heart set on leaving the Emirates and reuniting with his former boss at Old Trafford has proved to be an offer too good to turn down.

Despite offering him several new contracts, it's reported that Arsenal will be willing to let the former World Cup winner leave the Emirates in the January transfer window as they will be wanting to make some kind of profit from his exit. So if Mesut Ozil will indeed be leaving Arsenal, it is time for Arsene Wenger to look commence the succession planning.
Here are three players Arsenal could replace Mesut Ozil with in January.

#3 Morgan Sanson

Morgan Sanson is still a relatively unknown entity in European football. The youngster excelled at both Montpellier and Marseille last season, proving he could adjust to multiple tactical systems.
Last season in 39 appearances, Sanson scored four goals and produced 14 assists, all from open play. He was the most creative player of anyone aged 23 and under. For such a young player, the 23-year-old exudes an unrivalled level of consistency. His playing style is unique as he knows how to adapt to several roles.

He can distribute like Xavi but depending on the situation, he can easily drive through the heart of the midfield like Arturo Vidal. Arsenal needs such variety and intelligence, as they already struggle against low-block teams.

#2 Emil Forsberg

With RB Leipzig's rise to prominence last season, the fame of Emil Forsberg also rose. The headlines were stolen by Timo Werner and Naby Keita, but it was Emil Forsberg who was the driving force behind Leipzig's mind-boggling form. The Swede is nimble on his feet, good in tight spaces, direct with passing and works hard off the ball. He'd bring so much to the Emirates stadium, in both style and mentality.
Last season, Forsberg produced an assist every 123 minutes, whilst creating 94 chances in the process, he scored eight goals and produced 19 assists in the Bundesliga. That total is already the 2nd highest assist tally in Bundesliga history.

#1 Riyad Mahrez

Arsenal have had their eye on Riyad Mahrez for several transfer windows now and the departure of Mesut Ozil could be the key that facilitates the transfer. Arsene Wenger hasn't been willing to depart with £40mllion for the winger but Ozil's situation may force his hand. And what a transfer to be forced into, Riyad Mahrez is a former PFA Player of the Year and he's been Leicester City's most naturally gifted player since he arrived.

In his time in the Premier League, the Algerian has scored 28 goals, provided 19 assists, created 42 clear-cut chances and completed 3,093 passes. He fits perfectly into Arsene Wenger's philosophy as he can operate efficiently in tight spaces.

The Algerian would be more direct than Ozil and create nearly just as much if given a free role. He'd certainly score more than the German, seeing as Ozil has admitted to having a mental block in front of goal.
