Things aren't well at Manchester United. The Red Devils cling to a top half place in the Premier League, already nine points behind the leaders. The frustrating cycle of inconsistency continues. The squad loses points at regular intervals. Jose Mourinho’s place as manager is under threat.
Although Mourinho takes criticism in buckets whenever United fail, the players must improve, as well. Too many [so-called] talented stars struggle to thrive while playing Mourinho’s style, often touted as “anti-football”. The Special One is finding it particularly difficult to improve his players right now. They aren’t helping by underperforming when the chips are down.
The Red Devils spent close to £450 million following Mourinho’s arrival three summers ago. Despite the luxurious signings, they've not been rewarded since the first campaign's Europa League and EFL Cup triumphs. Ed Woodward came under heavy pressure this summer for his reluctance to sign more players.
One can understand his thinking. United employ many multi-talented stars who are far more capable. The tension within management might not help their case, but the underperforming stars at United have the talent to perform at a higher level.
