Which have been the Top 5 signings in the Serie A during the current transfer window?

Friday 20th July 2018

The transfer market in the Serie A ahead of the 2018-19 season has been absolutely hectic. And even though the move of Cristiano Ronaldo has grabbed headlines all over the world, it is not the only deal that will turn heads in the Italian territory.

Here are some the best five signings - so far - in the Serie A ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo – from Real Madrid to Juventus

What else can we say regarding Ronaldo? A certain top two player right now, while being a legitimate candidate to be considered as arguably the best player of all-time, the Portuguese superstar left Real Madrid after another UEFA Champions League title and now joins a Juventus team that has dominated the Serie A over the last decade.

Ronaldo’s aspirations with Juventus are simple: he wants to win the Champions League for the Old Lady. After scoring 450 goals in 438 appearances for Los Blancos across all competitions, there is no question that he needed a new challenge. Juventus will provide him exactly that, but without stepping on the pitch for the Turin side, it would be fair to already consider him as the best player in the entire league.

Valon Berisha – from RB Salzburg to Lazio

Austrian powerhouses RB Salzburg got fame across Europe following their impressive UEFA Europa League campaign last season, but they are beginning to suffer the consequences of that. And the first noticeable one was the departure of Valon Barisha, who joins Lazio to bolster an already stellar midfield group.

The Rome-based side will play in the UEFA Europa League next season, having already lost Felipe Anderson, while still remaining in danger of losing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. But Barisha is ready to fill that void. His attacking ability, versatility to fulfill several roles and creativity in the middle of the pitch will help Lazio towards their dream of returning to the Champions League. And while he might not be a big name as others in this list, there is no question that he could be one of the most underrated signings in the Serie A this term.

Lautaro Martinez – from Racing to Inter Milan

The smart money would have been to add Radja Nainggolan’s move from Roma to Inter, but Lautaro Martinez’s arrival certainly edges the one of the former Belgium international. The Argentine will have to battle with Mauro Icardi for playing time or move to a new position. But that will be decided later. The former Racing star will become a world-class player and Inter got him before he became too expensive, as he joins for a £20.70 million fee. Given the way the market has behaved, coupled with his insane potential, it’s hard to argue against this move.

Martinez was given the #10 shirt by Inter, and that is the best testament of all the faith the team has on his development. He will not take Icardi’s place as the team’s top attacking threat this year, but has all the ability in the world to do so sooner than later. One thing is clear, though: he is ready to take the Serie A by storm. And will certainly make Inter better despite being such a young player.

Justin Kluivert – from Ajax to AS Roma

Javier Pastore’s arrival from PSG to Roma certainly stands out, and the Argentinian will be Nainggolan’s natural replacement. However, few signings over the summer period in the Serie A will have a bigger impact on a long-term scenario than the one of Justin Kluivert to the country’s capital city. The Dutch international has all the tools to become a star in the near future, and Roma made an impressive business signing him for a relatively small fee of just £15.53 million.

It remains to be seen which role he will fulfill at Roma, though. Since he is quite young, and Roma have plenty of depth on the attacking line, it would make sense if they bring him with ease into the league, as the Italian Serie A is far more competitive than the Dutch Eredivisie. But don’t be surprised if he ends up being quite a bargain in only a few months. He certainly has enough talent to do so.

Alen Halilovic – from Hamburger SV to AC Milan

AC Milan are in quite a complicated scenario following their recent ban that will deny them the chance to play in the UEFA Europa League this upcoming season. However, the team has not stopped in their quest to add new players. And while they can’t add a star player due to their Financial Fair Play problems and the suspension imposed, they have still made a huge move in adding Alen Halilovic.

For those who don’t remember, Halilovic spent time in FC Barcelona's academy and also spent time with Hamburger and Las Palmas in past years. He is a talented playmaker who several experts used to compare to the likes of Zvonimir Boban and Luka Modric. Milan have lacked a player with those creative characteristics in recent years, and he will bolster the team’s depth in the final third. It is one player to keep an eye on; no doubt about it...
