Which Team Will Tempt Miralem Pjanic Away From Roma?

Wednesday 2nd March 2016
We take a look at the clubs that are currently knocking on the door of AS Roma midfielder and Bosnia and Herzegovina international Miralem Pjanic.

If you have seen Roma play in the last couple of seasons or played FIFA you would have seen Miralem Pjanic in action (or inaction!).

Pjanic comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina and on his day, he is probably one of the best midfielders in the world. Roma however, is a club that is very inconsistent and their best player is the same!

Pjanic, on his day, has some lucid passes and assists while also being prolific when you take his position in consideration – he is a central midfielder who plays very deep. However, when he is not in form, Pjanic cannot string a couple of good passes and Roma usually ends up with a bad result. In all honesty, I'm baffled that Miralem is still in Roma but when we take into consideration that he is very bad when not on his day, maybe we can find some arguments why he is not playing for a European top club, such as Real Madrid or Barcelona. Still, it's fun to see in which team Pjanić would fit best.

Personally, I think that the safest pick for Pjanic is Barcelona because I do not believe that Rakitic or Sergi Roberto can replace the genius of Iniesta, one of the best midfielders in the history of football. Pjanic is really a genius on the ball (again, on his day), so he would be a perfect replacement if he improves his consistency. One more safe pick is probably Real Madrid, where they need someone who will replace Modrić over time, and I don't see Kovacic in that role. I believe that Modric will not be able to play on his level for long (due to his age and continuous injuries) and you need an established player who can provide the Madrid midfield with things that Modric has, security on the defensive end and really amazing passes on the offensive end. However, Madrid might be a bad pick because Pjanic does not aid the defensive end so much, but neither did Modric when he first arrived, but he has grown over time into the complete midfielder, probably one of the best in the world.  Kovacic is too offensive, Isco is too much of a ball-hog, James is better as a winger or purely offensive midfielder and Casemiro is too defensive. In the squad right now, Kroos is the only pure replacement but I'm sure that Perez will sign another central midfielder – that is just his style.

One more club that has looked in Miralem's direction is Chelsea, and I see no reason why he would not move there. In the Chelsea midfield, there are now a couple of midfielders, but most of them are just really good at one end of the field. Matić and Mikel are really good defensively while Oscar is really good offensively. Fabregas is someone I can see being replaced soon, and the current story is that Pjanic is being looked at has some offers being thrown on Roma's table. Pjanic and Fabregas are similar players – elite passers and dribblers, but fairly slow and usually uninvolved on the defensive end. They are playmakers who orchestrate the attack, so I believe that, if Fabregas leaves Chelsea, Pjanić could be a good replacement.

If he can just be more consistent, Pjanic could attract interest from more teams, but even with the problem of consistency, he is still valued highly by some elite clubs in Europe. Reports say that Manchester United and PSG are also involved, but the main "suspects" are still Barcelona and Real Madrid for a long time now, with Chelsea "attacking" the Bosnian midfielder with news that his buyout clause of £31m has been revealed and that he is wanted by Antonio Conte, the man who is expected to replace Guus Hiddink at Chelsea come the Summer.

Where will he end up? Will he go this summer? We'll just have to wait and see.....
