6 Top UEFA transfers for 2019
There is something to be said for the UEFA calendar running perpendicular to the calendar year. Weather is naturally the primary reason but the ability to pause and take stock mid-season, not just for the campaign's first half, but to combine it with last season's run-in, allows us to measure the progress of winners and losers in a different light. Awarding the Ballon d'Or over this cross-sectioned period provides the opportunity to gauge top players in different situations with at least slightly different squads. Their individuality can be separated from teammates' contributions.
Transfers do the same. When players move to new clubs, we see what they can do in a different setting with new teammates, managers and, if they switch leagues, opponents. But they must time their moves well and choose the correct destination. Gigi Buffon didn't when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain two summers ago. Doubts persist as to Eden Hazard's transfer to Real Madrid this past close season.
With IRAIW's Premier League nominations already in the bag, here's a look at six standout transfers on the continent in 2019.
