Who could Manchester United buy instead of Alvaro Morata?

Monday 3rd July 2017
As transfer sagas go this was one that came out of nowhere. Manchester United's pursuit of Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann dominated the tabloids as the Frenchman was widely tipped to begin the revolution at Old Trafford.

Instead, he signed a new deal to keep him at Atletico and the interest cooled. This gave way for the rumour that United were looking at Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata in his stead. The youngster has failed to stamp his mark on the Spanish giants and it seems as though a move away would benefit his development.

However, this rumour has also gone cold as few new developments have been made. It has caused many fans to question whether Morata is the idea replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic following the Swede's superb debut season in the Premier League.

If United are to decide against signing the Real Madrid forward, then who could they buy instead?

Edinson Cavani

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has benefited hugely from Ibrahimovic joining Manchester United as he became the main man for the French side. The Uruguayan netted 35 goals this season but he couldn't fire PSG to the title as they were beaten to it by Monaco.

Irrespective of this failure, Cavani was outstanding throughout the season and fully warranted being trusted with the expectation of scoring the bulk of PSG's goals. The forward is quick, powerful and intelligent, while his clinical finishing makes him one of the standout strikers in the modern game.
With PSG struggling to make a real impact in the Champions League and losing out to Monaco in the league, it was hardly the most successful or enjoyable campaign for the big spending French side. This could yet see the forward tempted with a move away from the capital with United desperate for a top striker.

Anthony Modeste

One of the most talented strikers in Germany right now. Modeste took the Bundesliga by storm netting 25 goals at an average of one every 119 minutes. FC Koln were indebted to the forward as he fired them to a fifth placed finish. The side notched 49 points across the season and are slowly closing the gap on those above them, although they are still a huge 33 points shy of champions Bayern Munich.

Modeste is an incredibly quick and powerful player. He is comfortable bursting into the box, latching onto the end of a cross or running in behind the defence and really constitutes a well-rounded threat up-front.
For United, Modeste may be a more attainable target considering Koln do not possess the same sort of transfer power as PSG, who can afford to increase Cavani's wages to ward off any interest. The signing of Modeste may not be as big a headline as Griezmann, but it would be a step in the right direction.

Of course, there are many other strikers that United could look at purchasing, with a range of talents from being a target man to a lightning fast forward. While many will disagree on what type of striker Mourinho must sign, what everyone can agree on is that a new striker is vital, and the signing should not be left until the last minute.
