Why Reading FC should appoint Paul Clement as their new manager

Wednesday 21st March 2018

Championship side Reading have sacked their manager Jaap Stam after a dire run of form. The Dutchman guided the Royals to the Play-Off final last season but they were denied promotion to the Premier League on penalties by Huddersfield Town. They have been poor in this campaign and have not been able to build on last season. One win in eighteen games has brought Stam's reign to an end and with them languishing just above the bottom three, whoever comes in faces a difficult task in trying to avoid a relegation to League One.

There is a manager out there who suits Reading's style of play and that is Paul Clement. He is currently out of work after being sacked by Swansea City in December. The 46-year-old would be ideal for the Royals, in my opinion, and they should try and bring him in. He has a sparkling CV and has worked at some top clubs. There is no doubt that he is a top coach but his two managerial reigns at Derby County and Swansea City have split opinion on him as a top dog but he deserves another chance in the game.

His career so far

Clement played as a non-league footballer during his younger days but focused on becoming a coach at the age of 23. Clement worked in Chelsea's Centre of Excellence whilst working as a PE teacher. He then had stints at Fulham as a youth coach in 2000 and helped to coach the Republic of Ireland U21s. What has happened since then has been remarkable and some of the teams he has worked for has certainly raised some eyebrows.

He made his coaching career at Chelsea. He advanced through the youth teams, obtaining various roles from the U16s manager to the reserve team boss. He then got his chance as the assistant manager at Stamford Bridge under Guus Hiddink and kept this role under Carlo Ancelotti. He left Chelsea in 2011 when Ancelotti left and worked at Blackburn Rovers under Steve Kean. However, his time at Ewood Park was short lived and he made the move to PSG as their first-team coach with Ancelotti and coached Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Beckham.

He was then handed his first managerial role with Derby County in June 2015. However, despite the club being in the Play-Offs at the time, Clement was harshly sacked by the Rams after a poor run of form in February 2016. He went to work for England with their U21 squad before reuniting with Ancelotti at Bayern Munich. He worked with the likes of Phillip Lahm and Robert Lewandowski. He then left the German giants in January 2017 to take charge of Swansea City in the Premier League and he was able to keep them up in his first season. However, he was relieved of his duties in December after a poor start to this campaign.

Why he would suit Reading FC

Clement would be a great long-term option for the Royals. He likes to have his teams defensively organised and they are usually exciting going forward. He would be able to galvanise Reading's squad, which is a very talented squad with some top players who need an injection of confidence. Clement has worked at some of the world's greatest clubs and has obtained some great knowledge and tactics that will help him for the rest of his career. He did a good job at Derby County in the Championship and would have got them in the Play-Offs if he was given the full season. If Reading do go for him, he would no doubt keep them up this year and then, with the help of a couple of signings in the summer, they would be a force to be reckoned with next season.
