Russia 2018 World Cup Preview: Group B

Monday 11th June 2018

In housing former world champions Spain and current European champions Portugal, most would consider Group B something of a foregone conclusion. That would be foolish.

Spain may have formidable strength in depth across their squad, so much so that they can afford to leave the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Alvaro Morata in London. Portugal are powered by the indomitable Cristiano Ronaldo, a new generation of stars rising around him, including Bernardo Silva and Goncalo Guedes. Regardless, Iran and Morocco will not concede progression easily.

The favourites will have to be at their best to avoid upsets against both underdogs. Group B has far more depth than most credit. Indeed, it could prove to be the strongest, most competitive group of this World Cup.
