World Cup Preview: Which keeper will win the Golden Glove?
Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958. They bowed out to the hosts of that tournament, Sweden, in the UEFA playoff round. The Azzurri's absence deprives the world of one last look at Gianluigi Buffon and perhaps a first at his young namesake, Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite that, there is a wealth of skilled goalkeepers on display in Russia.
The hosts are proud to have Igor Akinfeev as their last line of defence. Likewise, Denmark trust in second-generation netminder Kasper Schmeichel. Nigeria will take their chances with 19-year-old Francis Uzoho. England abandoned longtime servant Joe Hart, handing the no.1 to Everton's Jordan Pickford. Each has an outside chance to claim the coveted Golden Glove as best keeper in this tournament but will have to outplay the following group of world-class shot-stoppers.
